Pinot Noir Grapes on the vine

Our roots run deep in Oregon, where we live by the Code of the West. Our parents, Ken and Penny Durant, taught my sister and I the value of hard work and inspired in us a love of the land. I have so many memories of planting vines with my mom in the spring, then growing up and learning how to harvest and finally, teaching my own daughters how to plant vines and pick grapes. Every big moment in our lives is  defined by this land, the work we do here and the family we share it with.

The Estate Educational Experience

This experience offers a unique opportunity for travelers and locals alike. Join us for a guided tour of the Durant Olive Mill and adjacent estate olive grove, followed by a traditional Blue Glass Tasting, where you will learn more about how our estate milled olive oil is made, what extra virgin means, and how to properly taste for quality and freshness. The olive oils will be thoughtfully paired with a variety of savory and sweet small plates to demonstrate how extra virgin olive oil can elevate even the most humble of foods. Durant Vineyards estate wines will round out the tasting as we compare different elevations, clones, and vintages of our estate and further explore the ways in which wine and olive oil complement each other and food.

2019 Rose bottle shot

A vivid salmon pink in the glass, this vintage of Durant Vineyards’ rosé of pinot noir is tantalizing yet diverse. Aromatics of cherry, key lime zest, watermelon and wild strawberry will tempt your taste buds. Mouthwatering flavors are met with a broad mid-palate that fills the cheeks with layers of bright ripe fruit. Crisp acidity provides a gorgeous backbone throughout, making for both a complex and refreshing wine. Pair with sunshine and good friends.

2019 Lark Chardonnay bottle shot

Summer gold in a glass. Aromatics of pear, ripe melon, and lemon cream. Though the nose presents this wine as bold and creamy, the palate brings mouthwatering acid that alights on the tongue and carries flavors of key lime, pear, apricot and barrel spice to a clean and crisp finale. A perfect Chardonnay.

2017 Madrone Pinot Noir Bottle Shot

Striking in color, this Pinot Noir is instantly eye-catching. The aromatics are beautiful and intricate: red fruit, cedar, mint and cranberry jump out of the glass. An approachable and round palate feel is met with layers of flavor and complex length. Notes of strawberry, rhubarb, cherry, and piecrust are complimented by a lush cranberry, savory qualities, and a particular juiciness that lingers.

2017 Ava Roan Pinot Noir Bottle Shot

A beautiful tone of red and ruby in the glass, this wine will draw you in instantly. Aromas including black cherry, cinnamon, pepper, chocolate, and leather continue to develop as this wine opens. This brooding Pinot Noir is both deep and diverse. Notes of ripe black cherry and anise are met mid-palate by a full mouthfeel that is complex and balanced. Integrated and supple tannins blend with rich plum, dried tobacco leaf, and mocha flavors that are persistent and create an elaborate finish that lasts well beyond your last sip.

Winemaker, Spencer, Drinking from a wine glass

Our winemaker Spencer Spetnagel found his passion for wine in 2000 as a fine dining server in Atlanta, Georgia while attending college. By 2002 Spencer knew: he was never going to work in a cubicle. He decided to move out West and make his passion his work.

Spencer started his first harvest intern position in 2004 with Ravenswood in Sonoma, California. Ultimately, Ravenswood offered Spencer a full-time position in the cellar, where he learned some of the joys and perils of winemaking over three years.

Next he decided to travel abroad for an Oenology and Viticulture program at Lincoln University in New Zealand. Spencer spent several years traveling around New Zealand, learning from seasoned winemakers in multiple regions. In 2008 Spencer returned to Ravenswood in Sonoma as Vintage Winemaker. In 2009 he took the position of Assistant Winemaker at Bargetto Winery in Santa Cruz, California, the oldest winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains, established in 1933.

From 2012 to 2016, Spencer worked for King Estate in Eugene, Oregon and was promoted to Winemaker during his tenure. While at King Estate, Spencer learned about making wine in Oregon by working with fruit sourced throughout the state.

Spencer joined Durant Vineyards as Winemaker in the summer of 2017, overseeing the final stages of the new winery build-out. Spencer’s inaugural vintage with Durant Vineyards was 2018.
